Building from England’s Woodlands + Transforming Timber Platform Launch
Our Building from England's Woodlands and Transforming Timber Platform launch event, held on 12 July 2023, showcased the groundbreaking findings from the first year of the Forestry Commission Timber in Construction Innovation funded "Building from England's Woodlands" project.
Spearheaded by NMITE in collaboration with dRMM Architects, Ecosystems Technologies, Edinburgh Napier University, and Built Environment - Smarter Transformation (BE-ST), this event delved into the transformative potential of utilising English hardwood forest products in the construction industry. Esteemed experts in timber construction and engineering explored ingenious methods to boost the application of homegrown English trees across the built environment.
With a focus on enhancing the UK's building's carbon footprint and supporting diverse woodland ecosystems, the symposium provided valuable insights into life cycle analysis, value chain mapping, quality assurance test work, and manufacturing compatibility.
The symposium's pinnacle was the launch of this Transforming Timber platform, born from the Innovate UK funded project led by BE-ST, ENU, and Ecosystems Technologies. This platform aims to expedite the commercialization of UK sourced mass timber products. Attendees were treated to case study examples of these innovative timber products, detailing their manufacturing process, testing, and quality assurance.
Participants gained valuable knowledge on the suitability of various species of English homegrown trees for construction, the potential of sawn, engineered, and mass timber products, and their integration into modern methods of construction, including co-products like wood fiber insulation.
Thank you to all who attended this captivating event, and we look forward to witnessing the remarkable impact of these advancements on the future of the built environment.
